DIMITRIS DRAGATAKIS (1914-2001): ADVANCING HIS LEGACY AND CONCERTO FOR VIOLA USING TWENTY-FIRST-CENTURY DIGITAL TOOLS

Elyse Dalabakis, PhD
PhD dissertation: Victoria University of Wellington, 2020

Elyse Dalabakis’s research focuses on digital humanities and how to advance the legacy and works of lesser-known composers using 21st-century digital tools, focusing specifically on Greek composer Dimitris Dragatakis and his Concerto for Viola. Her research uses Concerto for Viola as a digital case study to demonstrate how 21st-century performers, scholars, and archivists might approach advancing the works of lesser-known composers through digital mediums. Her study ensures Dragatakis’s legacy and musical works remain accessible in a predominantly ‘contactless’ and ‘socially-distanced’ world to future performers and scholars.

CRITICAL EDITION: DRAGATAKIS DIMITRIS - COMPLETE SOLO PIANO WORKS

Dr Lorenda Ramou
Philippos Nakas Music House, 2009

The present edition of the piano pieces by Dimitris Dragatakis intends to present the musical text as a whole, in a way that can be considered the closest possible to the composer' s wishes. The freedom of his writing, in conjunction with an often suggestive notation and the gradual transition of his musical thinking towards abstraction, leaves the interpreter with many questions concerning the aesthetic image to be recreated: how to handle the length of resonances and the use of pedal, changes in articulation, rhythmical precision and tempi, voice leading in polyphonic passages and desirable timbre.
